Dozens of people have died following flood caused by rains that hit localities Sunday afternoon overlooking Lake Tanganyika at Rutunga in Muhuta, Bujumbura Rural Province, some 30km south of the Burundian capital Bujumbura.
The flood occurred when a bridge on River Rutunga, located very close to Lake Tanganyika, collapsed.
Rocks and stones from upstream knocked people and cars.
The Burundian National Spokesman Liboire Bakundukize said rescue teams have been sent there, but could not say the damages.
