Police in New England urged motorists to stay off the roads Sunday due to freezing rain that caused a rash of accidents. The Massachusetts State Police said in a Twitter announcement: "Roads are slick in central Mass, Worcester City area. If you don't have to go out, wait!" A pileup on Interstate 290 in Worcester, Mass., involved at least 65 cars and three semi-trucks, and resulted in minor injuries to at least 30 people. At least 50 vehicles had to be towed away from the scene and the westbound lanes of the highway were closed most of Sunday morning, the Boston Herald said. The weather was not expected to improve much Sunday as New Englanders wrapped up the Thanksgiving holiday. Freezing rain advisories remained in effect in west of Boston and into Rhode Island and Connecticut and airport delays were considered likely as far north as Portland, Maine. The icy drizzle was expected to turn into snow Sunday evening, although warmer afternoon temperatures could reduce the amount of ice on the roads, AccuWeather.com said.
