Gunmen killed four Yemeni soldiers and wounded seven people, including three civilians, in an attack Saturday on intelligence headquarters in the main southern city of Aden, a security official said. The masked gunmen \"used machineguns and rocket-propelled grenades\" in the attack in the Tawahi coastal neighbourhood of Aden, the official told AFP requesting anonymity. He said the assailants failed to reach the intelligence headquarters and were repelled by guards stationed at the entrance to the base and the adjacent state television building. Four soldiers were killed and four others wounded, while three television employees, including two women, were also wounded. The gunmen managed to escape, he added. Witnesses said that two armoured vehicles at the gate of the television premises were seen on fire. Al-Qaeda militants remain active in southern Yemen, where separatist militants also attack security forces, pressing their demands for renewed independence for the south. South Yemen was a separate state before unification with the north in 1990.
