Hundreds of people were displaced due to flooding brought on by heavy rainfall in western Nepal Saturday, local media reported, according to dpa. In the far-western district of Kailali, 1,200 families were displaced, according to Avenues television. Villages and markets were submerged and transport disrupted. Two people were reported missing. The district recorded 381 millimetres of rainfall in 48 hours, the heaviest on record in 30 years. Police, soldiers and the Red Cross were conducting rescue operations, as evacuees sheltered in schools. More than 70 people have died in monsoon-related accidents in Nepal since mid-June.
