A man armed with a handgun and knife killed two women at an Elkhart, Ind., grocery store and then was fatally shot by police, officials said. Elkhart police said the unidentified gunman opened fire after entering the store Wednesday, killing an employee and a shopper, the Elkhart Truth reported Thursday. Police said early Thursday they did not know if the gunman had any connection to Martin's Supermarket or his victims and did not comment on a possible motive. No one else was injured, said Sgt. Trent Smith of the Indiana State Police, which is handling the investigation. "We believe it was a single shooter and he is dead," Smith said during a news conference Thursday. Smith said officers were in the area on an unrelated call and responded. The officers heard gunfire as they entered the store and found the gunman pointing his gun at someone. When the suspect turned his gun toward the officers, they shot and killed him. "We are pretty confident that Elkhart's quick response to the scene most definitely saved lives tonight," Smith said. Police recovered a knife and a large caliber, semi-automatic handgun in the store, WNDU-TV, South Bend, reported. Officials said police and the gunman exchanged "several" rounds of gunfire. Police said the victims' bodies were found about 10 to 12 store aisles apart. "It's a huge crime scene," Smith said. "The area where the shootings happened in the store are basically from one area of the store to the next."
