A man shot and killed a police officer in Louisiana and stabbed three women, one of them fatally on Wednesday, local media reported.
The victims of the attack in the town of Sunset, Louisiana included two sisters of the mayor of neighboring Grand Coteau.
After the attack, the suspect, identified as Harrison Wiley Jr, rammed his car through a convenience store.
He was detained after authorities tossed in tear gas and drove through an inner office of the convenience store, St Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz told NBC News.
Guidroz said Wiley stabbed his wife and the two sisters before shooting Police Officer Henry Nelson, 51, who was responding to the disturbance.
One of the sisters died, while Wiley's wife was in surgery late Wednesday and the other sister hospitalized in critical condition.
At least 50 local, parish and state officers responded to the scene at the convenience store.
Wiley suffered tear gas burns to his face and neck.
Guidroz said drugs may have been involved in the incident.
"When people ingest illegal drugs, they get brave, they get stupid," he said.
On Twitter, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said: "Our thoughts & prayers are w/ the families of Sunset Police Officer Henry Nelson & the other victims as they endure this senseless tragedy."
The sheriff's office and state police did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
