More than 1.2m people affected by flood in northeast India

More than 1.2 million people have been affected by monsoon floods that ravaged India’s north-eastern state of Assam.
Ten people had died and many thousands were left homeless from the flooding that began mid-August, the IANS news agency reported.
Assam’s main river, the Brahmaputra, and its tributaries had inundated 2,093 villages in 16 districts.
The total numbers of those affected comprised people who had been displaced, stranded around their homes and those who suffered damage to their crops, land or livelihood.
More than 163,000 people had taken shelter in government-run relief camps. Disaster relief agencies were engaged in rescue and relief work in the worst-affected districts, including Morigaon, Dhemaji and Tinsukia. Floods have also damaged standing crops in 112,635.25 hectares of land.
Other Indian states such as Bihar have also been hit by floods in recent days, although the situation has improved with the easing of rains.
