Saying it was "not a day for mercy," a judge sentenced a Philadelphia couple to 30-60 years in prison for beating and starving their 6-year-old son to death. Latiff Hadi, 50, also known as Floyd Wimes, and Tina Cuffie, 45, were given the prison terms Tuesday for the March 2012 death of Khalil Wimes, the Philadelphia News reported. They were convicted of third-degree murder and other counts in September. "This is not a day for mercy," Common Pleas Judge Barbara McDermott said, calling the abuse Khalil suffered "the worst case I've seen." Khalil weighed just 29 pounds when his parents brought him to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was pronounced dead within an hour. The boy had spent the first three years of his life in the care of a cousin, Alicia Nixon and her husband, but a Family Court judge gave Hadi and Cuffie custody and the city's Department of Human Services gave its OK, The Philadelphia Inquirer has reported. The couple inflicted the abuse on Khalil as a form of punishment for his behavior, authorities have said.
