Wildfires in Greece were brought under control, the
fire department said Sunday after a police officer was killed,
several homes were destroyed and hundreds of animals were burned to
death, dpa reported.
The 47-year-old policeman was taking part in firefighting operations
on Mount Hymettus in eastern Athens when he was burned to death,
state broadcaster ERA1 reported. He had been missing since Friday,
and his body was identified Sunday.
More than 100 fires broke out across the country in a 48-hour period,
whipped by strong winds. The largest started Friday in east Athens
and in the southern Peloponnese peninsula.
