A Portland police officer sustained non-life threatening injuries on Wednesday while pursuing three burglary suspects. But a K-9 police dog died from an apparent gunshot wound. "We've had two shootings where an officer has been shot in the last month. It points out to all of us that police work can be incredibly dangerous," Portland Police Chief Mike Reese said of the incident. "You never know when an incident like this can turn life-threatening." Authorities first spotted the suspects coming out of a police uniform supply shop, Blumenthal Uniform & Equipment, in southwest Portland early Wednesday morning. The suspects ran to their SUV, leading officers on a high-speed chase down the Southwest Capitol Highway. When the SUV crashed into a pole, one suspect left the car, prompting a canine officer to let go of his K-9. Gunfire was exchanged, though it's unclear how many officers fired their weapons. The suspect also sustained non-life threatening injuries and was apprehended about two miles from the shootout. The other two suspects are also in custody. "The dog was doing its job protecting the community, and it's tragic that we lost the dog," Reese said of the K9 killed in action.
