
At least 56 people were killed including women and children and several others wounded on Tuesday as a passenger coach collides with a trawler in Sukkur district of southern Sindh province of Pakistan, said officials.
A senior police official, Nasir Aftab told media that the Karachi-bound passenger bus, which was coming from northwestern city of Swat went on the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a goods container, killing at least 56 people.
He further said that 17 women and 18 children were among the killed and over 18 passengers were injured in the accident.
Rescue teams immediately reached the site of the accident and injured were shifted to the nearby Khairpur hospital where an emergency was imposed.
An administrative official of the hospital, Jaffar Soomro confirmed the toll, adding that condition of three wounded was critical.
According to police, the fatal accident occurred when the over-speeding coach overturned after head-on collision with a truck coming from the opposite direction near Theri Bypass in Sukkur. Sindh Governor, Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan expressed condolences over the fatal mishap and ordered for the provision of treatment to the victims.
