US police identified an alleged serial killer on Monday and said that the 43-year old sex offender has admitted involvement in at least seven murders and may have carried out many more.
An investigation into a murder at a motel led investigators to Gary, Indiana resident Darren Vann, who admitted his involvement in the first killing and led investigators to six more bodies.
The victims were all adult women and their bodies were found in abandoned houses.
During a press conference in Hammond, Indiana, police said it was likely there are more killings that stretch years back.
“It is possible that the investigation will lead to more victims,” said Hammond police chief John Doughty at a news conference.
“This could go back as far as 20 years, based on some statements that we have.”
Doughty said Vann was cooperating with detectives and accompanying them to houses to uncover more victims.
The investigation into the killing of 19-year-old Afrika Hardy in the hotel in Hammond led investigators to Vann who was tracked using telephone surveillance.
Vann then helped police find the six other victims in the Gary area reportedly including 35-year-old Anith Jones, 28-year-old Teairra Batey, 36-year-old Christine Williams and three unidentified women.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and charges will be pressed against Vann shortly.
