Police on Thursday arrested two gunmen who went on a deadly shooting spree in two different countries, in a dramatic turn of events in Seattle, Washington, and on the Canadian east coast in Moncton, New Brunswick.
A 26 year-old man walked onto the campus of Seattle Pacific University Thursday afternoon and shot four people, killing one of them, before being tackled to the ground by students as he reloaded his weapon.
The suspect, who was not named by police, was found to be carrying a knife and extra ammunition rounds in addition to his gun. He is believed to have acted alone.
Classes at the private Christian college were cancelled for the rest of Thursday and Friday, and the university president credited the emergency drills on campus for preparing students for the attack. They locked themselves in classrooms, turned off the lights, and used their phones to check for alerts.
Meanwhile in Moncton, 24 year-old Justin Bourque, who killed three officers and injured others with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), was arrested in the middle of the night after a 30-hour manhunt while the city was on lockdown.
Bourque, who also acted alone, had been carrying a rifle, shotgun, and crossbow, and was ultimately apprehended in the backyard of a local resident, where he hid between the trees.
The events have shocked the country, where such events are rare. Bourque's attack was the second deadliest day of all time for the RCMP. The suspect's motives are not yet clear, but Bourque had expressed contempt for authority in his writings online
