The rainy after-effects of a typhoon moving away from the Philippines killed two children, emergency officials said Sunday. Known internationally as Typhoon Mawar, but as Ambo in the Philippines, the Category 2 storm brought heavy rains to the northern region of the main island, ABS-CBNnews.com reported. The children, 2 and 4, were playing in a yard behind their house near a river and disappeared, Civil Defense Director Eugene Cabrera said. Sunday night, Mawar was moving north-northeast with sustained winds of 110 mph and gusts up to 130 mph, weather officials said. All warnings and watches in the Philippines had been dropped, the report said. The storm was expected to intensify over open water Monday before gradually losing strength, forecasters said.
