Powerful typhoon Vongfong was downgraded to an extratropical cyclone off Japan's Pacific coast on Tuesday, and was moving northeast after leaving at least two people dead and nearly 100 others injured in Japan.
The season's 19th tropical storm, one of the largest to strike Japan in years, made landfall in the southern region on Monday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds while sweeping across the country including Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Vongfong also damaged houses and uprooted trees in a wide area, and disrupted air, sea and land traffic nationwide. Evacuation advisories were issued for some 1.76 million people. Vongfong, named after "wasp" in Cantonese, also destroyed or damaged at least 52 houses and flooded more than 270 buildings across Japan.
The weather agency warned of possible landslides and floods in east Japan after heavy rain.
