Man who insulted UAE to be deported after serving jail term

The State Security Circuit of the Federal Supreme Court on Monday upheld the verdict of the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeals, in which a man was sentenced to six months in jail for insulting the UAE and the laws of the land. The court rejected the appeal filed by the 40-year-old Arab defendant, M.F.Sh., and ordered him to be deported after serving his jail term.

In another case, the state security court rejected the appeal submitted by A.N.G., Emirati, against a verdict issued by the Abu Dhabi Court of Appeals, which sentenced him to be jailed for two years for insulting government symbols in public.

In a third case, the same court accepted the appeal filed by 52-year-old Emirati man, A.M.G., who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeals. The defendant urged the court to adjourn the hearing on his petition as the defence lawyer did not show up. The court deferred reviewing the petition for hearing to May 29.

He was convicted by the Abu Dhabi Federal Appellate Court of attempting to murder a foreign person, which the state security prosecution regarded as a terrorist act. According to the arraignment sheet, he ran over the victim in an attempt to kill him. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and the appeal court ordered the confiscation of the vehicle used in carrying out the crime. The court also ordered to shut down the social media account he had set up to promote the ideologies of some terrorist outfits.

In another case, the state security court accepted an appeal submitted by a 22-year-old Emirati woman, M.S.Sh., against a verdict issued by the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeals. The appeal court had sentenced the woman to five years in prison for joining terrorist group Daesh and transferring funds to the group. She was also convicted of setting up social media accounts to promote the ideologies of the group. The woman urged the judge to transfer her from Al Wathba jail to any other prison. In her request, she told the court's panel that she had spent a year and seven months of her jail term.

The court directed the public prosecution to review her request and consider her health condition and medical needs. The court adjourned the case for hearing on May 29.
