A man, who works as a lifeguard, has been charged in the Court of First Instance with raping his flatmate's girlfriend in their accommodation in Al Quoz.

The 38-year-old man from Tanzania took the woman, a Kenyan, by surprise as she was in the flat while her boyfriend was on the balcony. He threw her on a chair and raped her after taking down her trousers by force.

"I drank alcohol with my boyfriend, also Kenyan, after midnight on April 21 at a bootlegging den in Al Quoz. I met the accused at a nearby supermarket and he asked for my number but I did not give it to him," the complainant, 23, told the prosecutor.

"I later told my boyfriend I had no money to take a cab so he offered me to spend the night at his place. I was surprised to see the accused entering the flat after us. My boyfriend told me he was a friend. We slept on the floor."

She admitted she had sex with her boyfriend and they were interrupted by the accused, who came to ask for help in the kitchen. She claimed he followed her and clearly told her he wanted to have sex with her after locking the door. After she walked out of the kitchen, she woke up her boyfriend crying about what was happening.

"When my boyfriend went to the balcony to smoke a cigarette, the defendant attacked me again and forced himself on me," she said.

In the middle of what was going on, she could not find her mobile phone. The woman left her boyfriend talking with the accused and went to the balcony. She could draw the attention of a security guard who called the police.

The police arrested her and the accused. The civil defence also came after the woman had threatened to jump off.

Her boyfriend, who is also sought by the police for having sex out of the wedlock, remains at large.
"We first received a report on an attempted suicide. We went there with a policewoman. The persons involved in the complaint were standing outside the building. The woman told us she went to the flat and had sex with her boyfriend. The other man then raped her and locked the door to force her to stay with him. However, the accused denied having raped her and claimed he locked the door because the runaway suspect told him so," a police lieutenant said.

Blood and semen traces lifted off a sheet and a blanket were found to belong to an unknown male. Those traces did not match with those of the defendant who has been accused of rape.

The latter denied the woman's charges and claimed he only kissed her on her neck.
