RTA’s Transport Museum
Dubai - Arab Today

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, recently opened RTA's Transport Museum after being revamped and fitted with antique miniatures and additional artefacts depicting the details of the current development of transportation systems in the Emirate of Dubai.

It also gives a futuristic perspective of transportation systems through physical models and interactive screens narrating the history and visions of transportation and the infrastructure of the Emirate.

Al Tayer expressed his delight with the efforts made to accomplish this museum, which perfectly replicates the evolution and development of Dubai transportation systems along with challenges surmounted in order to respond to future requirements, rendering the Emirate an example to be emulated in this field at the local, regional and international levels.

The Transport Museum will act as a platform for acquainting visitors with the story of transportation challenges and difficulties encountered by the Emirate, and how it managed to beat them all the way through to the current admirable situation. It also gives them exposure to the vision and futuristic ambitions of RTA in this regard.

Flanked by several CEOs and Directors, Al Tayer toured the gallery, which comprises several corners, each tells the historical evolution of a specific transportation and roads topic, describing the developments witnessed by each. As such there are corners displaying the evolution of vehicle number plates, driving licenses, old marine transit modes, and the cumbersome primitive transit means marked with noticeable suffering of community members at that time. It is remarkable that the facility displays a model of the first 4WD vehicle that had arrived in the Emirate in 1931.

One corner describes the historical visits of Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of the Executive Council, and H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Council, to RTA's headquarters to endorse projects, which are unveiled from time to time to upgrade the infrastructure of the Emirate. The facility also exhibits images of the Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport (DAST) and iconic brand of RTA for attracting the best ideas and practices from government and private entities as well as public-benefit entities towards realising RTA's vision of Safe and Smooth Transport for All.

The Transport Museum comprises a host of technologies including interactive screens taking the visitor in a virtual tour of Dubai road planning using touch screens through which RTA can figure out the visitor's future vision for city streets needed. There is also another screen running a documentary of Dubai history in a thrilling manner visualising how people were coping with the tough reality, economic hardship and primitive transit means. Thus the visitor experiences a lively historical documentary reflecting the tireless efforts and solid will that has reshaped the current profile of Dubai.

The Museum displays models of the existing and future projects of the RTA, such as the Water Canal and the eye-catching design of metro stations. It also exhibits projects planned for Dubai up to 2020, 2030 and 2050 along with illuminated plates replicating the anticipated designs of future vehicles.

The Museum is characterised by its subdued unflashy lights rendering the tour of the gallery a quiet & calming inquest in the past, present and future.
