Chicago radio great Larry Lujack dead at 73

Chicago radio disc jockey Larry Lujack died of esophageal cancer in New Mexico where he and his wife Jude had retired, said his family. He was 73. Known as "Superjock" and "Uncle Lar," the member of the National Radio Hall of Fame and Illinois Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame died Wednesday in hospice care, his spouse told the Chicago Tribune. Lujack was a popular personality on Chicago rock stations from the 1960s until he retired in 1987, revered for his hilarious "Animal Stories" and "Cheap Trashy Showbiz Reports." Bruce DuMont, founder and president of the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago, told the newspaper Lujack paved the way for shock jocks such as Howard Stern and Don Imus. "He wasn't defined by being a hall of famer or a superjock, he was defined by being the man that he was, and he was an amazing human being," Jude Lujack said.
