Cani admits he will need to wait to make his Atletico Madrid debut but is working hard to get back to full fitness.
The 33-year-old midfielder has joined champions Atletico on loan from Villarreal until the end of the season, a move the veteran admitted came as a surprise, particularly as he has fallen out of favour with the Yellow Submarine this season.
Having made only 10 appearances all season, and suffered an ankle injury prior to the winter break, Cani said he needed time to get in shape but hopes to make the most of his unexpected opportunity. "I did not expect this chance," he said at his introduction, quoted by Marca.
"I'm trying to use every minute to give my best to the coach and to try and be here for longer. I need time to train with the team. I'm not in top form, that is clear. It will be up to the coach but I will be ready to train as soon as possible."
Cani, who came through the ranks at Real Zaragoza, spent eight and a half seasons with Villarreal, scoring 33 goals in 309 appearances.
