France’s Emilie Fer has secured gold in the women’s Individual Kayak Slalom (K1) in a time of 105.90. Australia’s Jessica Fox, whose British-born father is five-time world champion Richard Fox, came second (106.51) to claim the silver. Spain’s Maialen Chourraut (106.87) won bronze. Fer said afterwards: ‘I have some difficulty realising what has happened. I took some risks because I had nothing to lose and I knew I needed to go fast. I’m delighted for France and for myself.’ Asked what was most memorable, the first French woman to get a Canoe Slalom gold said: ‘Of course the podium and all the French supporters. I would like to have been a little mouse amongst the supporters to hear everything they were saying.’ She said of her coach: ‘He kept telling me everybody else’s time. I had to tell him to stop because I knew what I had to do to win.’
