London - AFP

Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday launched an appeal with the Football Association (FA) against the red card shown to midfielder Nenad Milijas in their 1-1 draw at Arsenal on Tuesday. The Serbian midfielder was shown a straight red card by referee Stuart Attwell after sliding in on Mikel Arteta in the second half of the game at the Emirates Stadium. Wolves announced their decision to appeal on the club's official website. The FA's disciplinary panel will review the case and decide whether Milijas' three-match ban should be rescinded. They are expected to deliver their verdict before Wolves' trip to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. Speaking after the match, Wolves manager Mick McCarthy said he did not feel the challenge warranted such severe punishment. "If he (Attwell) sees it again then it can't be (a red card)," he said. "Nenad's got his foot on the ground and makes contact with the ball. Somebody said to me, 'He's got his studs up.' Well, you generally do if you tackle with your foot sliding in." McCarthy added: "That rarefied atmosphere out there is a difficult place to work in whether you are a player, coach, manager, referee or assistant. "It's pretty pressurised out there and I think there was a lot of pressure on him (Attwell) to do it."
