Ill Sharapova pulls out of WTA Montreal
Toronto - AFP
World number two Maria Sharapova withdrew from the WTA Montreal event citing a viral infection. The Russian Olympic silver medalist joins US gold medal winner Serena Williams in missing the event, which falls directly after the end of the Games' tennis competition. "I'm sorry not to be able to play," Sharapova said on Wednesday. "I have a bad viral infection which I must have picked up after London." Sharapova will be replaced in the draw by Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan. In second round matches Wednesday, fifth-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova rallied to beat Kazakhstani Ksenia Pervak 4-6, 7-6 (7/0), 6-0. Italy's Sara Errani, the eighth seed, cruised past Slovakia's Jana Cepelova 6-3, 6-2 and fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta advanced when South African Chanelle Scheepers retired with an injury in the second set.

to 'eternal style' of late Alaia
Paris - Emiratesvoice
Two months after legendary designer Azzedine Alaia's sudden death plunged the fashion world into mourning, an exhibition in homage to the "King of Cling" opens Monday in his studios in Paris. The Tunisian-born designer, renowned for the way his clothes hugged the body, died suddenly in November aged 82, reportedly of heart failure after falling down the stairs at his home. The diminutive maverick, who ignored fashion week convention by showing when and where he wanted, in July produced his first couture collection in six years to rapturous reviews. Now some of his most iconic dresses are going on display in the glass-roofed gallery next to his studio and home in the Marais district where he used to show his creations. It includes the dress worn by supermodel Naomi Campbell, his longtime friend and muse, when she led
