Mariners deal Suzuki to Yankees

The Seattle Mariners have traded Japanese star Ichiro Suzuki to the New York Yankees for a pair of minor league pitchers, the Mariners announced Monday. The 12-year Major League Baseball veteran Suzuki has spent his entire career with the Mariners. Suzuki, a 10-time all-star, was the American League MVP in 2001. He was also named AL rookie of the year that same season. The 38-year-old Suzuki leads the Mariners all-time in hits, triples and runs scored. The Mariners received right-handed pitchers D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar in exchange for Suzuki. Suzuki, a right fielder, led MLB in hits seven times, tying Pete Rose and Ty Cobb for the most all-time. He belted a league record 262 hits in 2004 and his 10 consecutive seasons, beginning in 2001, with 200 or more hits is also a MLB record. Suzuki helped Japan win the World Baseball Classic title in 2006 and another one three years later. He has hit four homers, has 15 stolen bases and is batting .261 this season. Suzuki faces his former Mariner teammates Monday night as the Yankees visit Seattle\'s Safeco Field ballpark.
