New Zealand were 7-0 at lunch after Pakistan were dismissed for 351 in their first innings in the third and final Test in Sharjah on Friday.
Brendon McCullum was six not out while Tom Latham hadn't scored when the teams walked off for the break.
Off-spinner Mark Craig returned with his best figures of 7-94 -- his first five-wicket haul -- as Pakistan lost their last seven wickets for the addition of 70 runs after resuming the day at 281-3.
Opener Mohammad Hafeez made his highest Test score of 197.
The team members and officials from both nations observed a minute's silence and wore black armbands to join the sporting world in mourning young Australian batsman Phillip Hughes, who died on Thursday after being struck by a bouncer.
The two teams abandoned the second day's play in the third Test in Sharjah on Thursday as a mark of respect.
Pakistan lead the three-match series 1-0.
