Russia on top in European athletic team championships
France's Christophe Lemaitre
Paris - Arab Today
Russia made the most of home advantage to take the first day lead in the European team championships at a humid and windy Cheboksary ahead of France and Germany.
Russia will go into Sunday's concluding day on 187 points with the French squad on 175.5 and Germany on 172.
Defending champions Germany were left to especially regret their disqualification from the men's 4x100m relay on a day when Russia and France claimed five wins apiece.
One of the French victories was delivered by star sprinter Christophe Lemaitre with the four-time European champion winning the 100m in a wind-affected time of 10.26sec.
Britain's Richard Kilty, the world 60m indoor champion, was second in 10.35sec.
The best performance of the day in the women's events came from Russia's Yekaterina Koneva who took the triple jump with a 14.98m attempt.

Two months after legendary designer Azzedine Alaia's sudden death plunged the fashion world into mourning, an exhibition in homage to the "King of Cling" opens Monday in his studios in Paris. The Tunisian-born designer, renowned for the way his clothes hugged the body, died suddenly in November aged 82, reportedly of heart failure after falling down the stairs at his home. The diminutive maverick, who ignored fashion week convention by showing when and where he wanted, in July produced his first couture collection in six years to rapturous reviews. Now some of his most iconic dresses are going on display in the glass-roofed gallery next to his studio and home in the Marais district where he used to show his creations. It includes the dress worn by supermodel Naomi Campbell, his longtime friend and muse, when she led
