Vonn wins super-G to close on Stenmark's record

American Lindsey Vonn continued her seemingly unstoppable pursuit of Ingemar Stenmark's World Cup victory record by winning the women's super-G at Cortina d'Ampezzo to take the overall lead of the competition on Sunday.

A day after claiming a record 37th World Cup downhill win, Vonn was one of several skiers to benefit from a late start on the Olympia delle Tofane course in the spectacular Dolomites mountains.

Starting with bib 19, the former Olympic downhill champion clocked a winning time of 1min 26.55sec to push Liechtenstein's Tina Weirather off the top step of the podium.

Weirather, with bib 18, finished second at 0.69sec behind Vonn with Germany's Viktoria Rebensburg claiming third place at 1.15sec with bib 21.

Vonn now has 75 World Cup victories, just 11 short of Swedish legend Stenmark's tally of 86.

It also allowed the American speed queen to take the overall World Cup lead from Swiss rival Lara Gut, who finished fifth at 1.31 behind.

Vonn, who sits tied with retired Austrian legend Annemarie Moser-Proell on four overall World Cup triumphs, now sits top of the overall, the downhill and super-G competitions at what is the halfway point of the season.

She leads Gut by 45 points in the overall and after making it four from four downhill wins on Saturday, holds a 122-point lead on Canadian Larisa Yurkiw in alpine's main speed event.

Vonn has so far won the first three of this season's super-G races and has a 30-point lead on Austrian Cornelia Huetter in the discipline standings.

The women's World Cup continues next weekend with a slalom and giant slalom in the Slovenian resort of Maribor.

A week later, Vonn will be looking to dominate the field again when the speed events of the downhill and super-G return to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
