Australian Jarryd Hayne, the former rugby league star who jumped to American football this season was recalled Saturday to the active roster of the injury-hit San Francisco 49ers.
Hayne, a two-time player of the year in Australia's National Rugby League, made headlines worldwide when he claimed a spot on the 49ers' season-opening active roster as a kick returner and running back.
But after appearing in six games he was waived on October 31, then signed by San Francisco to their practice squad on November 2.
His recall to the active roster follows the placement of guard Alex Boone on injured reserve with a right knee injury.
Hayne said earlier this month that time on the practice squad had made him more confident in his American football skills.
He worked primarily on special teams on his prior stint on the active roster, but after some dazzling pre-season performances he disappointed in the regular season.
Hayne fumbled three times as a punt returner, including in his very first attempt.
He averaged 9.5 yards on eight returns, the longest a 37-yard sprint that set up the 49ers' only touchdown in a 47-7 loss at Arizona on September 27.
If he does play for San Francisco again this season, Hayne could reclaim punt return duties from Bruce Ellington, or he could see time at running back after Shaun Draughn was ruled out of Sunday's game at the Detroit Lions with a knee injury -- just the latest 49ers running back to be sidelined.
