Auto racer Aleshin upgraded to stable after crash

Russian rookie driver Mikhail Aleshin was upgraded to stable condition after suffering head and chest injuries during a multi-car practice crash ahead of the IndyCar auto race.
Aleshin had already qualified for Saturday's race when he was involved in a flying wreck on the final practice run of Friday night's schedule at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, 81 kilometers (50 miles) east of Los Angeles.
The 27-year-old from Moscow, who earlier this year became the first Russian to compete in the Indianapolis 500, was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center.
IndyCar doctor Terry Trammell said Aleshin's injuries included "fractured ribs, a broken right clavicle, a concussion and chest injuries."
Aleshin is expected to remain in the southern California hospital while he undergoes treatment for his injuries.
Another driver involved in the accident, Charlie Kimball, was treated by doctors at the Auto Club track and released.
