John Daly was unrepentant after hurling a club into Lake Michigan from Whistling Straits' par-three seventh hole, where he chalked up a 10 in the second round of the PGA Championship.
Daly was in the water off the tee not once but three times. By the time the strokes and penalties were totted up, it wasn't until his seventh shot that he put the ball in play -- heaving his iron into the lake as he headed for the green.
It was quickly recovered by a youth who dived for it from a boat, then triumphantly held it aloft.
"I've always said, 'You throw a club, it shows you care,'" said Daly, who won the first of his two major titles at the 1991 PGA Championship.
The big-hitting American, who also won the Open Championship in 1995, remains a fan favorite for his grip-it-and-rip-it playing style, devil may care attitude and even his garish clothes.
He's a master of the on-course meltdown, and told a group of reporters after Friday's round that his latest was a "reflex" action.
"It's no more than somebody slamming down when they can't write a story right or the kids aren't listening," he said.
As for the rest of the round, Daly said, "Your body goes into a little shock after that.
"I know we all go through it, but I just seem to go through it more than anybody for some reason," added Daly after completing his round of 10-over 82 for an 11-over total of 155 that had him missing the halfway cut by miles.
