Diaz appointed as River coach

Ramon Diaz has been reappointed coach of fallen Argentine football giants River Plate, the club confirmed on Thursday. The 53-year-old replaces Matias Almeyda, who was sacked earlier in the week following poor results. A former River Plate striker, Diaz later coached the club twice before winning five Argentine titles, the Copa Libertadores (1996) and the Supercopa Sudamericana (1997). The 33-time Argentine champions returned to the top flight this season but have just 23 points from 17 matches.
