Hirscher edges closer to overall giant slalom title

Austrian Marcel Hirscher, who has already won the World Cup crystal globe for the giant slalom, safely negotiated the discipline's first leg Saturday to edge closer to the overall title.
Hirscher, winner of five giant slaloms this season, finished sixth on the 1.3km-long Roc de Fer course, 0.97sec behind Norwegian pace-setter Henrik Kristoffersen.
Hirscher's closest rival for the overall title is Kjetil Jansrud, but the Norwegian, who has already bagged this season's downhill and super-G crystal globes, is not a technical specialist.
With a previous best giant slalom finish this season of 14th, Jansrud's last podium in the discipline was back in December 2011 and he didn't look like threatening on Saturday, finishing 2.10sec off the pace in 21st position.
The men round off the season with the slalom on Sunday.
