Former Bayern Munich caretaker coach Andries Jonker has joined Felix Magath as his assistant at Bundesliga rivals Wolfsburg. The Dutchman took charge of Bayern's last five games of the 2010/11 season following the dismissal of Louis van Gaal and he led them to a place in the UEFA Champions League, including an 8-1 mauling of St. Pauli on the penultimate day of the season. The 49-year-old then became Bayern's reserve-team coach following the arrival of Jupp Heynckes as head coach last season, but was only offered a contract as coach of their U-19s next season, a role he declined. The long-time assistant of Van Gaal will now join Magath and his other assistant Bernd Hollerbach, completing the backroom staff at the Wolves. "My coaching team and I are delighted to have been able to attract the experience and competence of Andries Jonker," said Magath in a statement. "Andries Jonker is a respected and valued coach with inter-personal and technical qualities which fit in perfectly with our coaching team. We extend a warm welcome to Andries Jonker at Wolfsburg." The Wolves won the Bundesliga in 2009, but have struggled in each of the last two seasons, although a good second half to their last campaign has increased the expectations ahead of next season. Magath has made no secret of his desire to challenge for trophies once again with the club he led to the title three years ago before moving to Schalke, and he has already set the target of obtaining a place in Europe next season.
