Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team, is still chasing his pro football dream.
Sam was the biggest name among some 100 participants in the NFL's veteran combine, where league hopefuls who haven't managed to stay hooked up to a club can showcase their talents.
The 25-year-old defensive end made history last May when he was taken in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams.
He played for the Rams in four pre-season games, making 11 tackles and three quarterback sacks, and was among the last players they released before trimming to the final NFL roster limits.
Dallas then signed Sam to their practice squad, but he never made onto the Cowboys' active roster and was released in October.
The attention he garnered as the first openly gay player to be drafted helped Sam land a spot on "Dancing with the Stars," although he didn't want to talk about television's celebrity dance competition on Sunday.
"Next question," he said when asked about it, preferring to focus on his continuing football aspirations.
"I am very confident that I will be playing football this year... somewhere," he said.
