Villarreal missed the chance to move above Real Madrid into third in La Liga as their six-game winning streak was snapped by a 0-0 draw at home to Real Betis on Saturday.
The Yellow Submarine are now level with Real on 40 points, but have seen their lead over Celta Vigo in the battle for the fourth Champions League place cut to six points.
League leaders Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid are all in action on Sunday when they face Las Palmas, Athletic Bilbao and Sporting Gijon respectively.
Former Manchester City and Celtic striker John Guidetti scored twice as Celta registered their first league win in four games in a 4-3 thriller over Levante.
Guidetti and Iago Aspas put the hosts into a commanding 3-0 lead before two goals in as many minutes from Deyverson and Pedro Lopez gave the league's bottom-placed side hope.
Fabian Orellana restored Celta's two-goal cushion and, despite Jose Luis Morales's strike ensuring a nervy finish, victory moved Celta back into fifth.
Sevilla had briefly gone ahead of Celta earlier in the day with their ninth consecutive home victory in all competitions thanks to Kevin Gameiro's quickfire double in a 2-1 win over Malaga.
The Frenchman scored twice in two minutes just before half-time to take his tally for the season to 14.
Charles pulled a goal back for the visitors before both sides were reduced to 10 men late on with red cards for Vicente Iborra and Arthur Boka, but Sevilla held on to inflict Malaga's first league defeat since November.
