Days after Lena Dunahm slammed critics who claimed she molested her sister based on an excerpt from her new book, the actress has issued an apology for the 'insensitve' remarks she made about sexual predators.
In a statement written for Time, the 28-year-old actress says she was "dismayed over the recent interpretation of events described in [her] book 'Not That Kind of Girl.'"
"Childhood sexual abuse is a life-shattering event for so many, and I have been vocal about the rights of survivors," she wrote. "If the situations described in my book have been painful or triggering for people to read, I am sorry, as that was never my intention. I am also aware that the comic use of the term "sexual predator" was insensitive, and I'm sorry for that as well."
Dunham came under fire earlier this week after conservative website Truth Revolt called her a child molester citing an essay from her memoir where Dunham admits that her 7-year-old self once "spread open" her sister's vagina while the two played outside with pebbles.
Dunham fired back at the website and said its comments were "upsetting and disgusting." The actress has also threatened legan action if they don't retract the story.
While describing her relationship with her then-baby sister in another essay, Dunham likens herself to a "sexual predator," but ultimately admits she just wanted to feel "needed."
"Basically, anything a sexual predator might do to woo a small suburban girl I was trying. Maybe, I thought, she would be more willing to accept kisses if I wore the face mask my grandmother had for when she did her dialysis... What I really wanted, beyond affection, was to feel that she needed me, that she was helpless without her big sister leading her through the world."
In her apology, the Girls star also said her sister, Grace, is her best friend and that everything she's written about her has been published with her sister's approval.
