Catalan leader calls independence referendum, defying Madrid

The president of Catalonia on Saturday called a referendum for November 9 on whether the region should be independent from Spain, defying Madrid's attempts to block the move.
The Spanish government has said it will block the ballot planned by Artur Mas by appealing to the Constitutional Court.
