Ukraine asks US for special security status

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko pleaded with Washington Thursday to provide his country with "special," non-NATO security status to help beef up its defenses against aggression from Russia.
"Given today's situation, Ukraine's democracy will have to rely on a strong army," Poroshenko told a joint meeting of the US Congress. "With this in mind, I strongly encourage the United States to give Ukraine special, non-allied partner status."
