Members of the National People's Assembly (Lower House of Parliament) unanimously adopted on Wednesday in Algiers the bill establishing the alimony fund for divorced women exercising the right of custody of their children.
Chaired by Mohamed Larbi Ould Khelifa, Speaker of the Lower House, the session devoted to the vote took place in the presence of Minister of Justice, Tayeb Louh.
In a speech address on this occasion, the Minister of Justice said this “humanitarian fund a milestone which strengthens the legal system to guarantee the protection and consolidation of women's and children’s rights in Algeria."
These two categories (women and children) enjoy special attention from President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika who has repeatedly stressed "the need to strengthen the legal framework specific to them," adding that the legislation adopted today "is part of the implementations of President Bouteflika’s orientations in this field.”
Louh recalled the state's efforts to protect women in the context of the constitutional reform of 2008 and the electoral law of 2012, through which women's rights and their representation were enshrined and enhanced at elected assemblies.
As part of the enrichment of legal instruments in this field, the minister announced that "the bill amending the penal code relating to the fight against violence against women will soon be submitted to an ad hoc committee, in addition the review of the law on child protection."
