Canada names new finance minister

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Wednesday he has named Joe Oliver as finance minister to replace Jim Flaherty, who resigned after eight years in the position. Oliver had served as Natural Resources Minister. He has an extensive financial background, having worked as a regulator for Canada’s most populous province and as an investment banker. Flaherty, who was finance minister since 2006, is returning to the private sector.
