Canada's transportation ministry warned Wednesday of mechanical problems with four Fiat Chrysler vehicles that could impair steering and spark a fire.
In a statement, Transport Canada said it had received more than 100 consumer complaints about a failure of the power steering hose in the Dodge Journey and Avenger, as well as in Chrysler 200 and Sebring models.
It warned of a risk of vehicle fire from a leak of hydraulic oil in the engine area, as well as possible "loss of power steering assist."
The manufacturer has been notified of the safety issues. Nearly 300,000 vehicles are believed to be affected, according to the government.
In a statement, Transport Minister Marc Garneau said he may order a product recall if Chrysler does not quickly fix the problems.
"Canadians deserve to know that the cars they rely on to get to work and transport their families are safe," Garneau said.
"I reserve the option of forcing a recall if corrective measures are not applied in a satisfactory manner."
