The European Commission Tuesday announced additional funding of 2.5 million euro to assist people affected by the continuing fighting in Eastern Ukraine.
"We are moving to help some of the most vulnerable victims of this conflict. These civilians, many of them women and children, have been forced to flee their homes at a short notice, leaving behind even the most necessary belongings. They need our help to live through the months ahead, " EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, responsible for International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid , told a press conference.
This humanitarian aid is geared towards helping to register and relocate internally displaced people, provide shelter, food, water, healthcare, and protection in preparation for the coming winter, she noted.
The 2.5 million euro comes on the top of 250, 000 euro the European Commission provided recently in Ukraine through the International Federation of the Red Cross/Red Crescent.
Asked about the decision by Russia to send an humanitarian convoy to eastern Ukraine, Georgeiva replied that it was a "Russian decision", noting that any assistance must meet international standards of neutrality.
