The number of French unemployed rose in December to 3.496 million, a level never before seen in France, according to data from the Labour Ministry on Tuesday.
In annual terms, unemployment here has risen 5.7 percent, or by more than 190,000 people and more than 2.2 million people here have now been unemployed for more than a year.
French President Francois Hollande in 2014 promised to reduce the jobless levels by the end of that year, but failed to do so.
Since he came to power in May 2012, the ranks of the unemployed have swollen by just over 600,000.
