Japan to extend $15.5m in antiterrorism aid for Middle East

Japan unveiled a set of measures Tuesday to help tackle terrorism including financial aid of $15.5 million, or 1.83 billion yen, to build counterterrorism capacity in Africa and the Middle East where Islamic State and other terrorists are active, Kyodo reported.
Japan will outline the measures during an international antiterrorism meeting slated for Thursday in Washington, Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters.
The aid, of which $7.5 million was already pledged by Kishida during his visit to Brussels in January, is aimed at strengthening border control and investigation capabilities in recipient countries, according to the minister.
