German Chancellor Angela Merkel will back the current Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos to lead the Eurogroup, she told a joint press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Monday in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
Merkel said that de Guindos had been an excellent minister in difficult times and she appreciated good relations between de Guindos and Wolfgang Schauble, German's federal minister of finance.
Rajoy on Sunday received German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Santiago de Compostela, the capital of the northwestern region of Galicia and birthplace of Rajoy.
Merkel and Rajoy walked a stretch of six km of the Way of Saint James on Sunday, and on Monday they gathered in a private meeting held in the emblematic Hostal de los Reyes Catolicos.
Before, Rajoy accompanied Merkel to visit the Cathedral of Santiago, where the mortal remains of the Apostle are. There, both have embraced the statue of the apostle Santiago as tradition says.
