South Korea to sharply hike tobacco prices starting next year

South Korea said Thursday that it will seek to hike tobacco prices by 80 percent starting January as part of comprehensive anti-smoking measures to cut the country's high smoking rate.
The government said that it plans to push for raising tobacco prices by 2,000 won (US$1.95) per pack to 4,500 won, adding that it will continue to hike cigarette prices in tandem with inflationary pressure.
