Staffan de Mistura calls on Europe to support his Aleppo Freeze initiative

UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, Monday urged Europe to contribute to bring stability in Syria and stressed that there is no military but only a political solution to the conflict.
Speaking at the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, he said the Focus must be on three areas: reduce violence, increase humanitarian and push for political dialogue among Syrians.
"We are not talking about New Geneva III but we are talking about steps.
"Let use test if this can be done. We have selected Aleppo because it is the cocktail of everything that exists in Syria. It is the last big city which has not completely collapsed," he said.
"We are talking about Aleppo as a freeze. A stopping of the heavy barrel bombs and Aerial bombing on one side and the stopping of rockets and mortars from the other size," said the UN official and noted that they are discussing this initative with Bashar Al-Assad regime.
"We need more Europe in this," he underlined and said that EU foreign ministers have also realized that they should contribute to some kind of initiative for stability in Syria.
He suggested that one way to do that is for Europe to offer a a package of assistance for Aleppo.
"The people would realize what an advantage, what a change it would be If they could push everyone to follow the same not in Aleppo only but everwhere in Syria," he added.
Kuwait is set to host the 3rd internationl donors' conference for the Syrian people on March 31, part of the Arab Gulf country's contributions to alleviate suffering of the Syrian people whether internally displaced or refugees in neighboring countries.
