Tokyo stocks lost ground Wednesday morning as the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar soured the market mood, with investors looking to lock in gains made recently following the market's recent run of closing highs.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 97.38 points, or 0.57 percent, from Tuesday to 17,137.60.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, declined 6.08 points, or 0.44 percent, to 1,373.72.
Notable decliners by the morning break comprised electric power and gas, land transportation and air transportation-linked stocks.
