British jazz trumpeter Kenny Ball, who played at the wedding reception for Prince Charles and Princess Diana, died at the age of 82 on Thursday, his manager said. Ball shot to fame in the 1960s with hits including "Moonlight in Moscow" which reached number two in Britain in 1962. It was also a hit in the United States and sold more than one million copies around the world. His manager Les Squires said the musician died in Basildon Hospital in Essex in the early hours of Monday. "He had been in and out of hospital recently but sadly this time he did not come out, but he was playing to the end," Squires said. Ball was survived by his partner and by his son Keith, who in recent years had joined his father on stage playing with his group The Jazzmen. The trumpeter had toured with US jazz pioneer Louis Armstrong in the late 1960s and regularly shared a stage with British jazz legends such as George Melly and Humphrey Lyttelton. With his trademark well-groomed moustache, he was a familiar fixture on British television in the 1970s and 1980s on programmes such as "The Morecambe and Wise Show." But he once said that the highlight of his career in 1981 when he performed at Buckingham Palace for the wedding reception of Charles and Diana.
