Top seed Monfils pulls out of San Jose tennis event
San Jose - AFP
Top seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils has pulled out of the ATP Tour's San Jose Open with a right knee injury, organizers said. Monfils, who is ranked 13th in the world, withdrew on Wednesday after playing in a doubles match on Tuesday. He was schedule to play in his first singles match on Thursday. Monfils started to feel pain in his knee during his last tournament where he reached the final in Montpellier. He said the pain returned this week in San Jose where he also played in an exhibition match on Monday. Monfils is expected to return to France to get a magnetic resonance imaging scan on the knee. Monfils will also miss next week's Regions Morgan Keegan Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. He will be replaced in the San Jose singles draw by lucky loser Blake Strode of the USA.

Two months after legendary designer Azzedine Alaia's sudden death plunged the fashion world into mourning, an exhibition in homage to the "King of Cling" opens Monday in his studios in Paris. The Tunisian-born designer, renowned for the way his clothes hugged the body, died suddenly in November aged 82, reportedly of heart failure after falling down the stairs at his home. The diminutive maverick, who ignored fashion week convention by showing when and where he wanted, in July produced his first couture collection in six years to rapturous reviews. Now some of his most iconic dresses are going on display in the glass-roofed gallery next to his studio and home in the Marais district where he used to show his creations. It includes the dress worn by supermodel Naomi Campbell, his longtime friend and muse, when she led
